What is EMDR?
Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma and many other mental health problems.
Does EMDR Work?
EMDR Canada indicates that approximately 20 controlled studies have investigated the effects of EMDR. Although the process by which EMDR works remains unclear, these studies demonstrate effectiveness of EMDR in decreasing or eliminating symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety. EMDR has been deemed an effective treatment for PTSD by the American Psychiatric Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense, and the United Kingdom Department of Health.
What does EMDR Treatment Look Like?
EMDR tends to be a relatively short-term treatment lasting several sessions. Each person is different in terms of the number of sessions required to alleviate their PTSD symptoms.
EMDR is a standardized therapy that involves set strategies and protocols. It incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches, such as imaginal exposure, which is part of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). The goal of EMDR therapy is to process completely the experiences that are causing problems, and to include new ones that are needed for full health.
There are three stages in EMDR treatment: The first stage addresses past difficult memories. The second stage addresses current disturbances. The third and final stage addresses a plan of action for the future to maintain gains and prevent relapse.
Can EMDR Be Done Virtually? Can I do EMDR by Video?
