What is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) begins in childhood. Many people continue to show ADHD symptoms into adulthood. ADHD is characterized by problems with attention, impulsivity, and overactivity.
Some people have problems with all 3 types of symptoms, while others have problems primarily with attention. People with ADHD often struggle with the following:
- Difficulty following instructions,
- Disorganization,
- Frequently interrupting others,
- Acting without thinking,
- Talking excessively, or
- Feeling fidgety or restless.
People with ADD/ADHD often have difficulties in school or at work. Often these difficulties also show up at home or in their relationships with others. ADHD often occurs along with things like behaviour problems, learning disabilities, depression, anger issues, or anxiety. Psychologists are well qualified to conduct psychoeducational assessments to diagnose ADHD in children and adults.
Treatment for ADHD
Evidence-based treatment for ADHD includes short-term cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) treatment (12-16 sessions focused on strategies for attention, organization, problem solving, and maintenance of gains). Other therapies that can be helpful include mindfulness meditation and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
